Week 3 Post

Certified vs. Classified

This week we learned the definitions of classified and certified and how they fit into the school system. You thought about all the different people who are included in the school system. the firs part of this blog was to write down the people you classified as certified employees and the people you classified as classified employees.

The second part of this blog is where you are publishing your research. You were asked to pick a career and research that. You are to include all the categories from length of school to average salary.

The finally part of this blog is to include the information you learned about the career. Is this something you are still interested in pursuing for a career. Why or why not? Did you learn anything extra about the career that has swayed you either way? And include anything else you found interesting about the career.

My Memorable Teacher.

I have been in education a long time - as a student and as a teacher. There have been many people that have inspired me along the way. However my most memorable teacher is Coach Caporale. I  met Coach Caporale my freshman year when I entered high school. I met him my first day of trying out for the basketball team - he was a little Italian man however his personality was larger than life. He wasn't exactly nice - he never really smiled, and made us work out harder than I ever had to in my entire life to the point that I almost thought I would pass out from exhaustion. He was strict, he was intense, and he made me work harder that I ever had to. The one thing I really remember about him were his saying. He would start and end practice with these quotes, some made sense, some had left me wondering what he meant. For example, the saying that is most memorable to me is "Don't be on time, BE EARLY".  this is something that has stuck with me to this day - it is even in my classroom rules. You hear don't be late, be on time -- but this takes it one step further. This is something that is a small thing you can do but it can have huge affects. Usually when you think of a memorable teacher, you think of someone who was nice to you or really connected with you. He was not that person to me however I have learned life long lessons about how I want to love my life, how I want to choose excellence in my life - I know I can't be perfect how I can excel chasing perfection.

First Blog Assignment

Hi, my name is Jennifer Woods and I am the instructor for this course - Education Professions. You will be creating your own blog and will be posting weekly assignments here in this location. Remember the blog you have created and the password. You will be asked to respond to other blogs in this class. I will show you how to follow other blogs of this course.

In this first blog assignment, you are asked to
  • (1) write a brief summary about yourself
  • (2) write your summary of your Multiple Intelligence (MI) and Learning Style (LS)
  • (3) a time when you worked on a class assignment/project using your MI and LS
  • (4) and write what is the relatinship between the teacher's and student's learning styles?

Mrs Woods in a nutshell:
  • 20+ year educator 6th grade through college level
  • born in New Jersey
  • graduated from Old Dominion University Norfolk, VA
  • first teaching expereince in Hampton, VA - still remember every students name from my first year of teaching!
  • moved to Burbank, CA and taught there for 11 years
  • moved to Prescott Valley in 2008 to raise my small family
  • married for 15 years to a radio disc jockey - it is an Oldies station - listen to him!! 1450am/100.9fm - Fun Oldies Now!!
Learning Style (LS)
I am a visual learner - I like to see things!

Multiple Intelligence (MI)
I fit in the bodily-kinesthetic category - I like to move around as I am learning too - I think that is why I am drawn to the distance learning. I feel like technology is kinesthetic and allows me to
move while I am learning.

As you are answering the questions in this blog, please following the guideline:
  • be specific and detailed - both on your blog and your discussion board - I will not assign the amount I need for you to write, but I expect you to be detailed in your written assignments
  • in both your discussion boards and you blogs, you are asked to respond/comment on three different blogs/discussions boards. Your response should more than a response like "Great", or "I like that" or "Good job" - remember be detailed - tell WHY you think it is a good post. Relate back to the material that you have read or see in the week's assignments.
  • Be respectful in your responses to others - you may disagree with someone's idea however you MAY NOT be disrectful - we will do an activity with how one should respond in writing
  • Your blog and your discussion board should be error free - no grammatical errors on your postings - double check spelling, capitalization, and grammar!
A relationship between teacher and student learning styles
I loved being in Mr. Sterling's freshman English class. I didn't really like English but I liked the way he engaged his learners - he made it fun, interesting, and dynmaic. He had us working in groups, talking about our opinions, and used humor in all his lessons! Because of the way he taught the class, I excelled. I also remember a course - 10th biology - where I sturggled. There was a lot of notes, not much engagememtn between students, and a lot of copying notes. I can't even remember the teacher's name - that is how much I had blocked out this course and this teacher! I believe that as a teacher you have the power to engage your students. It is important to reach all students and all learning styles and intelligences.

** This is an example of your first blog posting. Blog assignmenst will be due by Wednesday of each week and the 3 posts you make to other blogs will be due by Sunday of each week. You will be given classtime to work on them but you may need to work on them on your own as well. I will check blogs each week and part of your grade we be on your blog.

Here are my kids - if you would like you can add a picture of yourself as well!
